Raynette K. Weiss and Assistant Pastor Jessie K. Weiss. We are two of Our Heavenly Father’s vessels. The meaning of Hallowed be your name. Wednesday March 5, 2025.

  • Psalm 9:10, “Those who know thy name put their trust in thee”
  • Exodus 3:1-5, where Moses encountered God in a burning bush

Matthew 6:9

  • “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name”

Luke 11:2

  • “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come”

Lesson:

Hallowed be thy name” is a line from the Lord’s Prayer that asks God to make his name holy and revered. It is a request that God demonstrate his holiness and glory. The word “hallow” means to make something holy, separate it, or sanctify it.

  • The phrase is a request for God to cause his name to be honored, exalted, and adored on earth as it is in heaven.
  • It is a request that God move and act in the world so that people will worship and treasure him above all else.
  • It is a request that God cause his word to be believed, his displeasure to be feared, and his commandments to be obeyed.
  • It is a request that God cause himself to be glorified.

Significance

The phrase is a recognition that God’s name is holy and that he is to be the most uniquely valued one in the world.

When Jesus teaches us to pray, “Hallowed be thy name” (Matt 6:9), He shows us that the name of God is consecrated. It is holy. God’s name is not merely transcendent and mysterious; it is intimate and personal and interpersonal. It is the basis for the covenant. In the Bible, “hallowed” means to make something holy or to set it apart for divine purposes. It can also mean to revere or honor something as holy.

It simply means living our life fully for the glory of God. I think of John the Baptist’s declaration, “He must increase and I must decrease.” We hallow his name by surrendering to the call he has put on our lives.

Closing Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Lord help me to walk in Your footsteps daily by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me and I know you will answer my prayers. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
