Sermon:
The Lord’s Prayer is a model for Christians to pray. It encourages Christians to cling to God’s will, to seek forgiveness, and to ask for God’s help. It also teaches the importance of forgiveness.
When Jesus teaches us to pray, “Hallowed be thy name” (Matt 6:9), He shows us that the name of God is consecrated. It is holy. God’s name is not merely transcendent and mysterious; it is intimate and personal and interpersonal. It is the basis for the covenant. In the Bible, “hallowed” means to make something holy or to set it apart for divine purposes. It can also mean to revere or honor something as holy.
“hallow his name,” is to honor, revere, and adore him. In short, we are to stand in awe-struck wonder at the greatness of this Father— the Father who is “in heaven.
- When we say “Thy Kingdom come,” we’re asking God to bring that goodness and happiness from heaven down to Earth, so everyone can be kind and happy.
Today, the Kingdom of God is present in the Church and just like the seeds it needs time to come to fruition. That is why we pray in the Lord’s Prayer.
“Thy will be done” is a prayer that asks God to do what he wants in the lives of children. It is a way to submit to God’s will and to trust that he knows what is best for his children.
Jesus modeled this prayer for his disciples, saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:41-42).
On earth as it is in heaven” means that when we pray, we are asking God to make the world a place where everyone is kind, loving, and does what is right, just like it is in heaven where there is only goodness and no bad things When we say “on earth as it is in heaven,” we are asking God to make our world more like that perfect place.
happen; basically, we are asking God to bring his perfect way of life to Earth.
