Matthew 26:6-13 6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,
7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
8 But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.
10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.
11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.
12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.
13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
Lesson:
In Christianity, the Wednesday of Holy Week is commonly referred to as Spy Wednesday or Holy Wednesday, and sometimes as Good Wednesday. This name is linked to the day on which Judas Iscariot arranged to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, according to the Gospel account. Note; this is not the Judas that is Jesus’s brother; that was a different Judas.
The term “Spy Wednesday” specifically highlights Judas’s role as an insider who revealed Jesus’s whereabouts to the authorities. The word spy, as used in the term, means “ambush, ambuscade, snare”. Additionally, among the disciples, Judas clandestinely was a spy and Wednesday was the day he chose to betray Christ. Many Christians attend special services focused on repentance and preparing their hearts for the events of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. It’s a time for personal introspection, confession, and seeking spiritual renewal.Today, the term “Tenebrae” refers to a Holy Week service usually held on Spy Wednesday that involves the gradual extinguishing of candles on a Tenebrae hearse, readings related to the Passion of Jesus, and the strepitus (loud noise).
Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son our Savior gave his body to be whipped and his face to be spit upon: Give us grace to accept joyfully the sufferings of the present time, confident of the glory that shall be revealed; through Jesus Christ. In the name of our lord and savior we pray.
Our lord and savior we pray. Please forgive me of my sins agains
t you, please come into my heart. By the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for Saving me.
