  • Matthew 6:13:
    This verse, part of the Lord’s Prayer, directly asks for deliverance from the evil one, emphasizing the need for God’s protection from temptation and evil.
  • James 4:7:
    This verse encourages believers to resist the devil, promising that he will flee from those who stand firm in their faith.
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:3:
    This verse reassures believers that God is faithful and will protect them from the evil one
  • 1 Peter 5:8-9:
    This passage warns about the devil’s prowling like a roaring lion, seeking to devour, and encourages believers to resist him, standing firm in their faith
  • 2 Timothy 4:18:
    This verse promises that the Lord will rescue believers from every evil deed and bring them safely into His heavenly kingdom.
  • Colossians 1:13:
    This verse speaks of being rescued from the power of darkness and brought into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son. 
  • Ephesians 6:10-18:
    This passage encourages believers to stand firm against the devil’s schemes by putting on the full armor of God

Lesson:

In the Lord’s Prayer, “deliver us from the evil one” means asking God to protect us from the influence and temptations of the devil and the forces of evil, seeking his deliverance from spiritual harm and adversity.

  • Recognizing a Spiritual Battle:
    This phrase acknowledges the reality of a spiritual battle against evil forces, recognizing that we are not alone in facing these challenges.
  • Seeking Divine Intervention:
    It’s a prayer for God’s intervention and protection, asking for his power to help us overcome temptation and evil.
  • Context in the Lord’s Prayer:
    The phrase “deliver us from evil” follows the request “lead us not into temptation,” emphasizing the need for God’s guidance and strength to resist evil. 
  • The Evil One:
    While the phrase can be interpreted as referring to the “evil one” (Satan/the devil), it also encompasses the broader concept of evil and its influence in the world. 
  • Overcoming Temptation:
    The prayer is a plea for God to help us resist temptation and not be led astray by the evil one’s schemes
  • Seeking Deliverance:
    It’s a prayer for deliverance from the negative consequences of evil, whether it’s spiritual, emotional, or physical.
  • Reliance on God:
    The phrase underscores our need to rely on God’s power and guidance to overcome evil, acknowledging our own limitations. 
    Deliver us from evil” acknowledges that we need deliverance. We don’t need to deny the evil that surrounds and threatens (and sometimes overwhelms) usDeliver us from the evil one is another way of restating do not lead us into temptation. Some versions translate “evil one” as “evil.

In that case, Jesus adds a balance to this request, “but deliver us from evil.” This phrase could mean, “deliver us from the temptations of the evil one.”

Closing Prayer: 

Heavenly Father we humbly ask for your protection, guidance, and deliverance from the evil one, that we may remain steadfast in your grace and resist all temptations, leading us to a life of righteousness and peace.”  In the name of Our lord and savior we pray.
