The House of Israel Are Our Heavenly Father’s Covenant People
Because Jacob was faithful, the Lord gave him the special name of Israel, which means “one who prevails with God” or “let God prevail”From the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem to the Mount of Beatitudes, Capernaum, and the Church of Annunciation in the north, it is clear that the Land of Israel is important to Christianity due to the fact that many important events in the religion’s history took place here. The spiritual meaning of Israel means
In Jewish texts during the Second Temple period and beyond, as well as in Christian Greco-Egyptian texts, Israel was understood to mean “a man seeing Our Heavenly Father.
Israel was to be Our Heavenly Father’s instrument to accomplish this great revelation and would serve as the messenger and witness of Our Heavenly Father’s reality and law to all the other nations of the earth.
The Book of Deuteronomy insists on the Israelites’ fidelity to the one God because that is the only reason for Israel’s existence as Our Heavenly Father’s covenant people. Our Heavenly Father’s love for Israel forms the basis of the unique relationship between them and demands from Our Heavenly Father’s chosen people a continuing faithful response.
For the Christian, the Holy Land is birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth and the site of his ministry; for the Moslem, Jerusalem’s Dome of the Rock marks the spot from which the Prophet Mohammed is said to have ascended to heaven. In Genesis 12, God promised Abraham, “I will make you a great nation (Israel), and I will bless you and make your name great. I will bless those who bless you, and curse those who curse you. In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” I don’t know about you, but I want to stand with Our Heavenly Father’s people.
