Mark 16:15 we read: “Go you into the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.” This includes handicapped persons. This implies restoration of PWD of their rightful inheritance in Jesus Christ and their rightful place in the church as part of the “Body of Christ.”
Mark 8:22-26 8:22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.
8:23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the mans eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, Do you see anything?
8:24 He looked up and said, I see people; they look like trees walking around.
8:25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the mans eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
8:26 Jesus sent him home, saying, Dont even go into the village.
Lesson:
When people have a disability they are born with defects. For instance, if someone has cerebral palsy with MS combined. If you read up on cerebral palsy it is just brain damage, and it is commonly called a defect with the physical part of the brain. If you also develop MS later in life, It can affect the muscles. It is not easy to deal with defects that are a combination. First you need to find out what the person really has. Some things are not on record like they should be. People that are born in the late 1940s or1950s or later do not have things on record. Therefore you should sit down with the person and find out about thier disability. Whatever it may be. Do not judge it on medical records, or incidents that happen in their houses. You may not know what is neurotically happening with the person. People have had people in someones’s house for 8 hours a day 7 days a week and still do not know enough about the person. They can also be there for many years and not know enough. It is important to be careful not to make a mistake in thinking someone has some thing they do not, or are led to beleive they have something, or they say yes something happened just to save their own lives that are threatened. Lets say an incident happened and the instigator of the incident says they did something but did not really, but said it because they would be killed. The person may turn around later and realize they made a mistake and turn around and correct it, But that does not happen that often. Sometimes the person I mentioned above could feel week or the muscles are not working right, so just as word of caution, make sure things re what they are or look like, or that they may not be what th ey look like. You would then have to dismiss that. The gospels show Jesus Christ as sensitive and caring towards persons with disabilities. They are the main focus of his healing ministry (Mark 8:22-26; 10:46-52). The Parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14) defines the place of persons with disabilities in the life of the Kingdom of God.
