Genesis 8: 8-12
8:8 Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground.
8:9 But the dove could find nowhere to perch because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark.
8:10 He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark.
8:11 When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth.
8:12 He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him.
The dove carries deep meaning. One showed Noah that God had not abandoned him to live on a boat forever. David saw in the dove a reflection of his own mortal frailty, and his need for God. The Spirit expressed itself as a dove in a moment of God’s glory manifested on earth.A Dove. The dove is the most common symbol of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, it was a dove that signaled the end of the flood (Gen 8:8-12). When Jesus was baptized, the heavens were opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the form of a dove (Mt 3:16; Mk 1:10; Lk 3:22; Jn 1:32).The dove of Noah’s Ark brought back the olive branch of peace between God and man, and since it found no resting place outside of the Ark, the Christian likewise, finds no safety outside the Church according to St Augustine (Sermo 96, 7,9: PL 38) and the Catechism – ‘Thus the flood and Noah’s ark prefigured salvation. What does a dove represent in the Bible? A dove in the Bible represents new beginnings, new possibilities, new creation, the presence of God. Genesis 6-9 tells the story of the great flood when God instructs Noah to build an ark so that Noah’s family and a remnant of God’s creatures might be saved for a new creation. The dove as a symbol of quiet innocence prompted Christ to advise his disciples to be aware of the evils of the world. When sending them out to teach his gospel, he warned them of future persecution: “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
Heavenly Father, I’m asking You to give me eyes to see, ears to hear, and a heart to receive Your correction and guidance, as I seek a faith revolution in my life—a dramatic turnaround in my thinking, believing, speaking and acting. I ask You to give me the strength to hold strong in the days ahead.
