Lesson:
Grapes, as a symbol, often point to spiritual fruitfulness and abundance, but they also represent divine wrath and judgement. They are depicted in fruitful scenarios, signaling blessings and bounty from God, as well as in the context of the wrathful “winepress of God’s fury. The Bible warns against drunkenness and the danger of intoxication, but also sees wine as a blessing that should be received with thanksgiving.
Grapes and wine have many spiritual meanings, including:
- Abundance: Grapes and wine can represent abundance, as in Genesis 27:28.
- Hope and new creation: Wine can represent hope and new creation.
- Joy: Wine can represent joy, as in toasts at celebrations.
- God’s blessing: Wine can represent God’s blessing, as in Judges 9:13 and Psalm 104:15.
- Resurrection: Wine can represent the resurrection of Jesus Christ, as “dead” grapes ferment and are filled with a new “spirit”.
- Intertwining of life, death, and rebirth: The grapevine can symbolize the intertwining of life, death, and rebirth.
- Birth and rebirth: Grapes can represent birth and rebirth because they are a plant that grows abundantly and was one of the first cultivated crops.
- Victory: The ripe harvest of grapes can represent victory and the promise of future rewards and happiness.
- Obedient Israel: A fruitful vine can symbolize obedient Israel, while wild grapes or an empty vine can speak of Israel’s disobedience.
The vine is used as a metaphor to describe the Kingdom of Heaven (“I am the true vine and my Father is the winegrower”, John, 15, 1). The wine growers are those who will preach the new covenant (Matthew, 20,1-16). The wine stands for the blood of Christ, the bread for his body.
Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father we pray and thank. You for your vine of grapes and what it does, we also thank you for helping people learn how important it is . We thank you for helping understand what this means. We ask that the Holy help people understand that do not. We pray this in the name of our lord and savior.
Lord Jesus take complete control of my life and help me to walk in Your footsteps daily by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me and I know you will answer my prayers. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
