Lesson:

In Christianity, the Christmas tree represents Jesus Christ’s birth and resurrection. People think of the tree’s branches and bushes as a sign of immortality because they look like Christ’s crown of thorns on the cross. Also, people believe that each ornament on the Christmas tree has a special meaning. The moral of the story is that if we help anyone in need, it seems that the help is done to Jesus himself and that will gain us the blessings of God. Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition—as we now know it—by the 16th century when sources record devout Christians bringing decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce.Jeremiah 10:3-4 King James Version (KJV)

For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.Because Christmas is the holiday that celebrates the birth of Christ, as a light in the dark world, the lit tree was a reminder of that light. The Christmas tree also represents the Tree of Life, commonly recognized as the most important tree in the garden of Eden.Where did the modern Christmas tree originate? The modern Christmas tree originated in Germany, where families set up a paradise tree in their homes on December 24, the religious feast day of Adam and Eve. They hung wafers on it (symbolizing the Eucharistic host, the Christian sign of redemption). In 1419, a guild in Freiburg put up a tree decorated with apples, flour-paste wafers, tinsel and gingerbread. In “Paradise Plays” that were performed to celebrate the feast day of Adam and Eve, which fell on Christmas Eve, a tree of knowledge was represented by an evergreen fir with apples tied to its branches. What Is the Classic Christmas Tree Called? The traditional Christmas tree, often called a “fir tree” or “Christmas fir,” is typically a Norway spruce or Douglas fir. These evergreen trees are iconic symbols of Christmas, known for their conical shape and needle retention throughout the holiday season. The Yule Tree. The tradition has origins with ancient civilizations in the middle east, Asia, and Europe. Our modern custom flourished in Germany and spread to other European nations and North America in the 19th century.

Angel Tree is a holiday assistance program in which an individual or group sponsors a child “Angel” and purchases new toys, clothing, shoes, or gift cards for children ages 0-12. Every Christmas there are children who do not receive gifts because their families cannot afford the expense.
