The Star of David’s origins can be traced back to the Seal of Solomon, a signet ring that was believed to give King Solomon power over supernatural beings. The Star of David became a symbol of Jewish identity in the 19th century, and it was adopted as the central symbol on the flag at the First Zionist Congress in 1897.
In Kabbalah, the Star of David can symbolize the connection between God, Israel, and the Torah. It can also symbolize the relationship between God and people or the seven virtues (kindness, severity, harmony, perseverance, splendor, foundation, and royalty)
The term Magen David, which in Jewish liturgy signifies God as the protector (shield) of David, gained currency among medieval Jewish mystics, who attached magical powers to King David’s shield just as earlier (non-Jewish) magical traditions had referred to the five-pointed star as the “seal of Solomon.
Since 1948, the Star of David has carried the dual significance of representing both the state of Israel and Jewish identity in general. In the United States especially, it continues to be used in the latter sense by a number of athletes.
