John 7:37-39
7:37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.
7:38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.
7:39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
John 4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
Ezekiel 36:25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
Ephisians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.
Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
Lesson:
Just as water is symbolic of life in the natural/ physical, it is also symbolic of life… eternal life…spiritually. Water is symbolic of Our Heavenly Father’s salvation and eternal life which he offers us all through faith in His Son. Water is often presented as a gift from Our Heavenly Father. Rainfall can be a sign for his favour and goodness. Droughts can be a sign of Our Heavenly Father’s anger. In the New Testament water becomes a sign of rebirth in Jesus’ baptism. One of the many passages in the Bible which uses water to symbolise blessing is Isaiah 35. Much of the book of Isaiah concerns Isaiah’s prophecies of God’s judgement on the sins of his people. The water above the sky shows about angels and heaven itself, while the water below represented the demons and their infernal abode. Water shows the Holy Spirit’s ability to refresh us, quench our spiritual thirst, cleanse us, and bring forth life wherever He flows. He is the rain of Heaven, and He is the living river that flows from within. Water can be symbolic for the Holy Spirit. Water is used all over the Bible to refer to Our Heavenly Father and his ability to refresh us, and in the New Testament, to the Holy Spirit (John 4:14 and 7:37-39). 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was waste and wild, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Following along this same theme, water sometimes symbolizes the spiritual cleansing that comes with the acceptance of Our Heavenly Father’s offer of salvation ( Ezek 36:25 ; Eph 5:26 ; Heb 10:22.Born of water’ refers to a physical birth, specifically being born a Jew. In John 3:5, this phrase is therefore used by Jesus to refer to the natural birth process, with ‘water’ referring to the amniotic fluid that surrounds the baby in the womb and is present during the birth process. Images of water pervade the Gospel stories, symbolizing chaos, rebirth, and new life. Jesus was baptized in water, walked on water, and turned water into wine.
Closing Prayer; Heavenly Father we thank you for the gift of water, we pray all that read this lesson get it in their hearts at how important water is to you and that you help them appreciate it more. We pray this in the name of Our lord and savior.
Prayer for salvation; Lord Jesus; Please come into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Take complete control of my life and help me to walk in Your footsteps daily by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me and I know you will answer my prayers. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
