Opening Hymn; Pass me not oh Gentle savior by Frances J. Crosby
Pass me not, O gentle Savior,Hear my humble cry;While on others Thou art calling,Do not pass me by.
Refrain:Savior, Savior,Hear my humble cry,While on others Thou art calling,Do not pass me by.
Let me at Thy throne of mercyFind a sweet relief;Kneeling there in deep contrition,Help my unbelief.
Trusting only in Thy merit,Would I seek Thy face;Heal my wounded, broken spirit,Save me by Thy grace.
Thou the spring of all my comfort,More than life to me,Whom have I on earth beside Thee,Whom in Heav’n but Thee.
Opening prayer; Heavenly Father, we realise that sin is such a little word, but its consequences are very terrible. Thank You that You judge the world in righteousness and that in Your grace, You sent Your only begotten Son to be born as the human Seed of Abraham and to shed His blood for the redemption of the world. Thank You that Christ’s blood was shed for us. Help us to reject the evil and choose the good and may my life be a testimony of Your goodness and grace. In Jesus’ name we pray, AMEN.
Sermon on Genesis Chapters 18 to 23;
Genesis 18 conveys a unique moment in Abraham’s life. He receives three unexpected visitors in the middle of the day. These were not ordinary visitors from God. These men were God’s special envoys and had a special message of Abraham.
Genesis 19 depicts the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by two angels sent by the Lord. Though the cities are laid waste, God remembers Abraham and brings Lot and his family out of their home to safety. Sitting at the gate in Sodom, Lot saw two angels come into the city. He rose immediately and urged them to come into his house. Though they refused, he insisted until they agreed to feast with him and pass the night in his home. Chapter 20 pertains to the events surrounding the lives of Abraham, Abimelech, Sarah and God. Abraham went south and told Abimelech that Sarah was really his sister. God told Abimelech that he would kill him because he took a man’s wife. He would not touch Sarah. God told Abimelech to pray and he may live, “if you don’t restore her, you will die.”Genesis 21 begins with the long-awaited birth of the son God had promised to Abraham and Sarah. This is the child through whom God would make of Abraham a great nation (Genesis 17:6–7). More recently, the Lord had promised both Abraham and Sarah that they would conceive and bear a son within a year’s time. Both of them laughed (Genesis 17:17; Genesis 18:12). God said the name of their son would be Isaac, which means laughter (Genesis 17:19).
God had a long endearing relationship with Abraham. They were very close. God would often consult Abraham before making his decisions.
Genesis 23 is about the death and burial of Abraham’s wife, Sarah. Sarah was 127 years old and died in a place called Kirjatharba in the land of Canaan. The Bible says that Abraham was very sad because for a long time; he depended on and loved Sarah very much. Living without Sarah was inconceivable to Abraham.
Finding a place to bury Sarah was not easy. Genesis 23 explains that Abraham had to humble himself before local merchants who viewed him as a mere stranger.
Closing Hymn; The God of Abraham Praise by Thomas Olivers
The God of Abraham praise;
Who reigns enthroned above,
Ancient of everlasting days,
And God of love,
Jehovah, great I AM,
By earth and heav’n confessed,
I bow and bless the sacred Name
Forever blest.
The God of Abraham praise,
At whose supreme command
From earth I rise and seek the joys
At His right hand.
I all on earth forsake,
Its wisdom, fame, and pow’r,
And Him my only portion make,
My shield and tow’r. He by Himself hath sworn –
I on His oath depend;
I shall, on eagles’ wings upborne,
To heav’n ascend.
I shall behold His face,
I shall His pow’r adore,
And sing the wonders of His grace
Forevermore.
closing prayer; What a wonderful God You are, and we praise Your holy name for all Your goodness and loving kindness to us and all people by sending Your only begotten Son to take the punishment that we deserve. Continue to provide for our daily needs, our Father and in Your graciousness provide for all Your children, according to Your Own promise – Yahweh-Yireh, the Lord will provide, in Jesus name we pray, AMEN.
