Our Heavenly Father strongly prohibits spreading rumors and gossip, viewing them as harmful, sinful acts that destroy reputations and relationships. Scripture instructs believers to avoid talebearers, prohibits bearing false witness, and commands that speech should only build others up (Leviticus 19:16, Ephesians 4:29, Proverbs 11:1. Our Heavenly Father commands, “You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people” (Leviticus 19:16).
Rumors are likened to a “burning fire” and “wood” that fuels quarrels (Proverbs 16:27, 26:20). Rumors are often untrue or exaggerated, violating the command against false witness (Exodus 20:16).The Bible describes gossipers as untrustworthy, meddlesome, and divisive (Proverbs 11:13, 20:19). Call to Action: Believers are urged to avoid those who gossip, refrain from sharing unverified information, and instead use words to give grace. Our Heavenly Father calls for truthful, uplifting communication, warning that such idle, destructive talk is a serious sin. Our Heavenly Father provides clear instructions regarding the spreading of rumors, viewing it as a serious sin that causes deep harm to relationships and one’s own spiritual standing. According to Scripture, spreading rumors is an act that separates close friends and is equated with other grave sins.
Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father, Bless us as we strive to find our way to true racial reconciliation. Open our eyes to all that goes on around us that contribute to racial injustice.
