When Jack died, he was denied entry into heaven because of his wicked deeds. He then went to the gates of hell, but the Devil, keeping his promise, refused him entry as well. The Devil sent Jack away with only a burning ember to light his way.The lantern: Jack placed the ember inside a carved-out turnip and was condemned to roam the Earth for eternity. In Ireland and Scotland, people began carving their own terrifying faces into turnips and placing them in windows to scare Stingy Jack’s wandering spirit and other malicious entities away. A new gourd: When Irish immigrants brought this tradition to America, they discovered that pumpkins were much more plentiful and easier to carve than turnips, leading to the modern pumpkin jack-o’-lantern.
