Rev.  Raynette K. Weiss and Associate Pastor Jessie K. Weiss. We are two of Our Heavenly Father’s vessels. This lesson is about Our Heavenly Father and talking in tongues. Saturday December 13, 2025.

The idea that Our Heavenly Father stopped “tongue talking” (speaking in

tongues) stems from a theological belief called Cessationism, which argues that miraculous spiritual gifts, including tongues, were for the early church only, serving specific purposes like spreading the Gospel and authenticating apostles, but ceased after the apostolic age, with some viewing modern glossolalia as different or even false, while other views maintain the gifts continue today. Cessationists point to 1 Corinthians 13:8-10, where Paul says prophecies and tongues will pass away when “the perfect comes,” interpreting this as the completion of the New Testament canon, while Pentecostals and Charismatics believe the gifts are still active and beneficial for believers.

Why Some Believe Tongues Ceased (Cessationist View)

Tongues were a temporary sign for unbelievers (uncircumcised Jews) to authenticate the new message of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 14:22) and for rapid, miraculous communication (Acts 2).The Apostle Paul addressed chaotic use of tongues in the Corinthian church, emphasizing order and interpretation, suggesting misuse led to its decline. They argue the “perfect” refers to Christ’s return, not the Bible, and the gifts remain for the church’s edification. Tongues can be a private language for speaking to God (1 Corinthians 14:2, 4).Signs of the Spirit: They see it as a valid manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s presence and power in believers today, alongside love, joy, and other “fruits of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23).

Different Understandings of “Tongues”Biblical Tongues: Often seen as known human languages not learned by the speaker (like at Pentecost) or a spiritual language for prayer/praise.Modern Glossolalia: Sometimes criticized as unintelligible babbling (like pagan rituals) rather than true language, or as a genuine spiritual gift, depending on the theological perspective.

Ultimately, whether “tongue talking” stopped depends on one’s interpretation of scripture and belief about the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in the church today. Speaking in tongues today is still under heavy debate, but back in the time of apostle Paul, it was stopped according to 1 corinthians chapter 13. This was due to a chaotic thing happening.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we confess our desire to understand Your Word and Your will more fully. We look to 1 Corinthians 13, where You tell us that prophecies will pass away, tongues will cease, and knowledge will vanish, but love never fails. Help us to focus on that enduring love and the perfect knowledge that comes when Christ returns, not the partial knowledge we have now.

Our lord and savior we pray, please forgive me of my sins

against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me.
