Rev.  Raynette K. Weiss and Associate Pastor Jessie K. Weiss. We are two of Our Heavenly Father’s vessels. What bells mean on Christmas. Deep study.  Monday December 22, 2025.

Bells on Christmas symbolize joy, the announcement of Christ’s birth, calling to worship, and driving away evil spirits, blending ancient traditions with Christian meanings of peace, celebration, and hope, echoing angels’ proclamations and church calls to service. They represent heaven’s announcement, the joyful noise of celebration, and a reminder of God’s watchfulness, appearing in carols like “Jingle Bells” and “Carol of the Bells. Proclamation & Joy: Bells announce the joyful arrival of Christmas and Jesus’ birth, similar to angels heralding the news to shepherds. Call to Worship: Historically, church bells called people to Christmas Eve and Midnight Mass, signaling sacred time. Spiritual Protection: Rooted in pagan traditions to ward off s pirits, this symbolism carried over to Christians seeing bells, dispelling evil and welcoming goodness. Hope & Peace: Hymns like “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” use bells to transition from despair to hope, symbolizing peace on earth.Good Fortune: Bells are associated with good luck and prosperity, welcoming a fresh, abundant year. Church Bells: Call to worship and celebrate the Nativity. Sleigh Bells: Evoke winter wonder and the festive, wintry spirit.Silver/Golden Bells: Found in decorations, symbolizing festive sparkle and richness.

Bells are a central symbol of Christmas, representing a call to celebrate the birth of Jesus and a universal announcement of joy.

Their meanings are rooted in both religious and historical traditions: Announcement of Christ’s Birth: Bells are rung to herald the arrival of Jesus. This echoes the biblical story of angels announcing the news to shepherds.Call to Worship: Historically, church bells summoned people to services before the widespread use of clocks. Many churches still ring bells at midnight on Christmas Eve to mark the start of the holiday.Protection and Safety:Guidance: Like bells used to lead sheep, they signify Jesus as the “Good Shepherd” protecting his followers.Warding Off Evil: In ancient pagan traditions, bells were rung during winter to drive away darkness and evil spirits.Arrival of Santa Claus: In secular tradition, jingling sleigh bells signal the arrival of Santa and his reindeer, creating excitement for children.”An Angel Gets His Wings”: Popularized by the film It’s a Wonderful Life, many associate the sound of a bell with the belief that an angel has just received their wings.Cultural and Historical Contexts:Jingle Bells: While widely celebrated, some historicalperspectives note that “jingle bells” were sometimes used in darker contexts, such as on horses or even on enslaved people to track movement.Caroling: During the Victorian era, bells became fashionable accessories for carolers to carry while singing.

Closing Prayer:

“Heavenly Father, the sound of these bells calls us to be bearers of Your message. Help us to hear the ‘wild and sweet’ words of Christmas not just as a song, but as a command. May our lives chime with Your love, bringing light to darkness, and demonstrating that true peace, found in Jesus, is a present, powerful reality. May we, through our redeemed lives, show the world the joy that transcends all circumstances.

Our lord and savior we pray, please forgive me of my sins

against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me.
