Rev.  Raynette K. Weiss and Associate Pastor Jessie K. Weiss. We are two of Our Heavenly Father’s vessels. What Garland, candles, and candy canes  and angels mean on Christmas biblically. Wednesday Deember 24, 2025.

Biblically, Christmas decorations like candles symbolize Jesus as the Light of the World, garlands/wreaths (evergreen/circular) represent eternal life and God’s unending love, while the candy cane signifies Jesus as the Good Shepherd (shepherd’s crook shape), white for purity, red stripes for His blood/sacrifice, and upside-down forms a ‘J’ for Jesus. These symbols turn secular items into teaching tools about Christ’s birth, life, and sacrifice, even in times when public Christian display was banned.

Candles & Lights Jesus, the Light: Candles represent Christ, the Light of the World, illuminating the darkness and guiding people to Him. Being Light: They also remind believers to be lights to others.

Garlands & Wreaths (Evergreens)Everlasting Life: The evergreen nature of wreaths and garlands symbolizes life that never ends, pointing to God’s eternal love.Crown of Thorns: Holly’s thorns and red berries can represent Jesus’s crown of thorns and shed blood.

Candy Canes Shepherd’s Crook: The ‘J’ shape resembles a shepherd’s staff, symbolizing Jesus as the Good Shepherd who guides His sheep.’J’ for Jesus: Turned upside down, the cane forms a ‘J’ for Jesus, according to some legends.Purity & Sacrifice: White represents purity, while red stripes symbolize Jesus’s blood and sacrifice for sins. Rock of Faith: The hardness of the candy can represent Jesus as a dependable “rock”.Hyssop Flavor: The peppermint flavor can be linked to hyssop, used for purification in biblical times, connecting to Christ’s healing.

Angels at Christmas are heavenly messengers (from Greek angelos) announcing Jesus’ birth, confirming His divine identity as the Savior, and bringing messages of hope, glory, and peace, serving to bridge heaven and earth during this miraculous event, appearing to shepherds and others to declare the good news. They are not just decorative figures but powerful agents delivering God’s plan, validating the sacredness of the nativity, and inviting people (even outcasts like shepherds) to recognize the arrival of the King.

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father As we drape our homes with garlands, green reminders of eternal life,

And light these candles, flickering flames that speak of Christ, the Light of the World,

May our homes be filled with Your steadfast love and presence.

Bless these sweet candy canes, shaped like a shepherd’s staff, a sign of Your watchful care,

White for Your purity, red for the blood You shed,

May they bring reminders of Your sacrifice and the joy of salvation.

And as we see the heavenly angels in our decorations,

Let us remember their message of peace and goodwill,

Guide us, Holy Spirit, to be bearers of Your light and love,

Shining brightly in this season,

For Your glory
