Rev.  Raynette K. Weiss and Associate Pastor Jessie K. Weiss. We are two of Our Heavenly Father’s vessels. What is Thanksgiving biblically. Saturday November 22, 2025.

Biblically, thanksgiving isa profound expression of gratitude, praise, and acknowledgment directed solely to God for His sovereignty, provision, andsaving grace. It is not merely a seasonal event but a continuous attitude and a form of worship that is commanded throughout scripture.

Biblical ConceptsRecognition of Our Heavenly Father as the Source of All Blessings: Thanksgiving is rooted in the understanding that every good and perfect gift, both material and spiritual, comes from Our Heavenly Father. (James 1:17). It is an acknowledgment of dependence on Him, which counters pride and self-sufficiency.A Form of Worship and Sacrifice: In the Old Testament, “thanksgiving” (Hebrew todah) was often expressed through specific peace offerings and communal festivals, such as the Feast of Tabernacles, symbolizing gratitude for the harvest and God’s faithfulness. In the New Testament, it is described as a “sacrifice of praise” that is a natural outflow of a believer’s heart. An Expression of Faith and Obedience: The act of giving thanks, especially in difficult times, is an act of obedience and faith, demonstrating trust that God is working all things together for good (Romans 8:28, 1 Thessalonians 5:18). Jesus himself gave thanks before performing miracles and at the Last Supper, setting an example for believers.A Defense Against Sin: Ingratitude is presented as a root sin in the Bible (Romans 1:21), leading to futile thinking and a cold heart toward Our Heavenly Father. Cultivating a thankful heart guards against discontentment, anxiety, and complaining.Tied to Grace and Redemption: The New Testament Greek word for thanksgiving, eucharistia, is linked to charis, meaning “grace” or “gift”. This connects thanksgiving directly to the unmerited gift of salvation and forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ, which is the ultimate reason for gratitude.Communal Aspect: Biblical thanksgiving is both a privateand a communal act. Paul often gave thanks for the faith and love of fellow believers, emphasizing the importance of shared gratitude within the community of faith.

In sum, the biblical meaning of thanksgiving is a continuous, humble, and joyful response of the heart, mind, and life to Our Heavenly Father’s abundant goodness and saving grace.

In the Bible, thanksgiving is a worshipful act of giving thanks to Our Heavenly Father for His blessings, character, and provisions. It is expressed through prayer, praise, and obedience, and is deeply connected to worship, often taking place during feasts and festivals. Thanksgiving involves acknowledging Our Heavenly Father’s goodness, recognizing Him as the source of all good things, and celebrating His role in salvation, provision, and creation. Key aspects of biblical thanksgiving.

A response to Our Heavenly Father’s actions and character: Christians are taught to give thanks for Our Heavenly Father’s creation, His love, His goodness, and His redemptive work through Jesus Christ. A central part of worship: The Psalms frequently call for thanksgiving as a way to enter God’s presence and praise Him (Psalm 100:4). It is seen as a sacrifice of praise, a way to “magnify” Our Heavenly Father.Linked to provision and deliverance: Thanksgiving is often a response to Our Heavenly Father’s provision of food and resources, as seen in Old Testament harvest festivals and the story of Jesus giving thanks before feeding the thousands. It is also a response to deliverance from danger. A spiritual offering: Thanksgiving is a way to express gratitude for spiritual gifts, such as salvation by grace, and is considered a hallmark of the Christian life. An ongoing practice: It is not just for special occasions; the New Testament emphasizes that believers should live a life of thanksgiving, giving thanks in word and deed in all circumstances.

Closing Prayer:Heavenly Father, we thank You for the biblical meaning of thanksgiving: to offer praise for Your steadfast love and all Your blessings, even in difficult circumstances. We pray for a heart that is unfeignedly thankful, rejoicing always as is Your will for us, and giving thanks in all things because every good gift is from You. Thank You for the grace of salvation through Christ and for Your constant goodness, mercy, and presence in our lives, now and forever.

Our lord and savior we pray, please forgive me of my sins against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me.
