(2 Timothy 3:1, 3) Such violent acts cause people to live in fear. (Luke 21:11) However, the Bible promises a time when violence will end and “people will dwell.
In addressing how a heavenly father might feel about gun violence, it’s important to consider various interpretations and understandings, drawing from religious and ethical perspectives. Gun violence, which results in death and injury, would naturally be seen as a violation of this gift the Heavenly Father gives to a human. Evil doesn’t reside in objects like guns, but in the hearts of individuals. Gun violence is seen as a manifestation of sin and a failure of individuals to live according to Our Heavenly Father’s plan for our lives. The Bible indicates that violence is linked to sin, envy, and other negative human traits. Therefore, the focus of the “heavenly father” regarding gun violence would likely be on the sinfulness that drives it and the need for moral transformation.
Some interpretations suggest that defending oneself and others from imminent harm is permissible, even if it involves the use of weapons. However, even in self-defense, the intent matters, and resorting to lethal force should be a last resort. Jesus’ teachings often emphasize peace and non-retaliation, as seen in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:38-42) and the command to love one’s enemies. While some might interpret these teachings as promoting pacifism, others view them as a call to prioritize peaceful means and avoid unnecessary violence.Christians are called to be peacemakers and to seek peace whenever possible. Some interpret Romans 13:1-4 as suggesting that governing authorities are given the power, including the “sword” (symbolizing the power to enforce laws and punish), to maintain order and justice. This suggests that Our Heavenly Father might view appropriate and just legal systems as having a role in regulating the use of weapons to ensure public safety.
A heavenly father would likely be deeply saddened by gun violence and the loss of life it causes. The primary focus would be on the sinful nature of humanity that leads to such acts. While acknowledging the possibility of self-defense, the overarching message of love, peace, and the sacredness of life would guide the understanding of this issue. Differing interpretations of scripture and individual conscience contribute to a range of views on the specifics of gun control and the appropriate use of force.
Closing Prayer: Heavenly Father “We pray for the forgiveness of those who have committed acts of violence, and for the peace that surpasses understanding to reign in our hearts and communities.
Our lord and savior we pray. Please forgive me of my sins
against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for Saving me.
