Psalm 1
1
Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
4
Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
5
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
Psalm 1 is a wisdom poem that serves as the introduction to the entire Book of Psalms, contrasting the path of the righteous with the destiny of the wicked.Avoids bad influences: A blessed person does not follow the advice of the wicked, walk in the path of sinners, or sit with mockers (a progressive decline from walking to standing to sitting).
Delights in God’s word: Instead, they find joy in the instruction or law of the Lord (the Torah) and meditate on it day and night. [1, Is like a stable tree: They are likened to a healthy tree planted by running streams, yielding fruit in season.Is unstable and fleeting: Unlike the rooted tree, the wicked are like worthless chaff (the husks of grain) that the windblows completely away.Faces judgment: They cannot stand in the judgment of God orremain in the assembly of the righteous.God watches over the faithful: The Lord closely watches and guards the path of the righteous, but the path of the ungodly ultimately leads to ruin and perishes.
Closing Prayer:
“Gracious Father, thank You for showing us the path of life and blessing.
Lord, help me to turn away from worldly distractions and the advice of those who do not knowep my feet from the path of wrongdoings and cynicism.
Instead, let my greatest joy be in Your instructions. Help me to think on Your word day and night so that my heart stays close to You.
Plant me deep like a tree beside the flowing streams of Your grace. Nourish my spirit so that I may bear good fruit in the proper season, and let my leaf not wither. Watch over my steps and let Your goodness guide all that I do.]
