2 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying,3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.7 I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
This is royal and prophetic poem about the foolish rebellion of human nations against God and the ultimate, unstoppable reign of His chosen King.
The Rebellion of the Nations (Verses 1–3): Rulersandpeople plot together to break free from God and His appointed ruler. They view God’s laws and authority as restrictive chains.God’s Reaction (Verses 4–6): Instead of panicking, God laughs at their weak defiance from heaven. He declares that He has already installed His true King on Mount Zion.The Decree of the Son (Verses 7–9): The King announces God’s decree, calling himself God’s Son. Heavenly Father,
We look around at a world where nations rage and people make vain and empty plans against You. Rulers and leaders take their stand together against You and against Your anointed King, thinking they can break free from Your loving boundaries. [1, 2, 3]
Yet, You are the One enthroned in the heavens, and You are never shaken. You have set Your King, Jesus, upon Your holy hill of Zion. Thank You for the decree that He is Your Son, and that You have given Him victory, power, and an eternal kingdom. [1, 2, 3]
Lord, forgive us for the times we, too, have acted like rebels—when we tried to rule our own lives and resisted Your gentle authority. Thank You that instead of crushing us in Your wrath, You poured out Your justice and mercy on the cross through Jesus Christ. [1]
Because of His grace, we choose today to be wise. We humble our hearts before You. We desire to serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. [1]
Remind us that we can boldly bring our requests to You. You promised Your Son that the nations are His inheritance and the ends of the earth are His possession. We ask You today for our world, our leaders, and our communities—that hearts would turn to surrender to Your rule.
We take sweet and eternal refuge in You. You are our shield, our strength, and our ultimate peace. [1, 2]
