Sermon:
Psalms 1, 2, and 3 explores the unified gateway to the Psalter, moving from the path of personal wisdom and the Word of God to the cosmic kingship of the Lord’s Anointed, and finally to a personal cry of deliverance in the presence of enemies. The Gateway: Psalms 1 and 2 function as a single introduction or “front porch” to the entire book of Psalms, uncredited to an author, setting up the foundational contrast between the righteous and the rebellious.
Psalm 3: Shifts the lens from a general royal/wisdom prologue into the very first historical situation of lament and personal trust (David fleeing from Absalom).The Bookends: Psalm 1 begins with “Blessed is the man,” and Psalm 2 concludes with “Blessed are all those who take refuge in him,” wrapping the reader in safety before trials arrive.
Psalm 1: The Two Ways (The Rooted Life)The Negative Walk: True stability begins with discernment—not walking in the counsel of the wicked, standing in the path of sinners, or sitting in the seat of scoffers. Sin is a progressive slide (walk → stand → sit) The Positive Delight: The blessed person delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on it day and night.The Tree and the Chaff: The righteous are like a tree transplanted by streams of water bearing fruit in season (vitality and perseverance), while the wicked are like worthless chaff blown away by the wind.
Psalm 3: The Morning Trust (The Shield in Trouble) The Human Crisis: David cries out while fleeing his rebellious son Absalom: “Lord, how many are my foes! Many rise up against me.”The Divine Shield: Amid taunts that “there is no salvation for him in God,” the psalmist declares God to be a shield around him, his glory, and the lifter of his head.Peace in the Night: “I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me”—demonstrating that the wisdom of Psalm 1 and the sovereign protection of Psalm 2 result in practical, fearless peace in the middle of real danger.
The Progression: We need the wisdom of the Word (Psalm 1), the security of the reigning King (Psalm 2), and the personal anchor of prayer in distress (Psalm 3).The Ultimate Fulfillment: These Psalms point us directly to Jesus Christ—the ultimate righteous man who perfectly lived Psalm 1, the true King defied by the nations in Psalm 2, and the suffering Savior whose head was lifted in resurrection victory in Psalm 3. This sermon uses God’s Word to show that we are blessed, but only blessed through Christ. It is an uplifting sermon showing that God really does love us.

Heavenly Father,
Planted in Your Word (Psalm 1)
Lord, keep my steps from the counsel of the ungodly and the paths of destruction. Let my deepest delight be in Your instruction, and let me meditate on Your truth day and night. Plant me firmly like a tree by the streams of living water, that I may yield good fruit in every season, that my leaves may not wither, and that Your grace may prosper the work of my hands.
Anchored in Your Kingdom (Psalm 2)
When the nations rage and worldly systems rebel against Your authority, let my heart not be shaken or afraid. You sit enthroned in the heavens and laugh at the futile plots of man. Help me to serve You with holy reverence and to take absolute refuge in Your anointed King, Jesus Christ. May I walk in the blessing of the Son, trusting that Your divine purpose will ultimately prevail over all the earth.
Protected in Your Shield (Psalm 3)
O Lord, how my troubles have increased around me, and how many rise up to challenge my peace! But You, O Lord, are a shield for me. You are my glory and the One who lifts my head high. I cry out to You in my distress, and You hear me from Your holy mountain. I can lie down in deep sleep and wake again refreshed, because You sustain me. Salvation belongs to the Lord, and Your blessing is upon Your people.
