According to the Bible, a person’s spirit is the immaterial, God-conscious part of humanity that sets us apart from animals. Breathed into humanity at creation, the human spirit is our innermost organ designed to know, worship, and commune directly with God, who gives you his spirit. The scriptures outline several key aspects of the human spirit to help us understand its role:n [Genesis 2:7], the Bible describes the creation of humanity: “then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” This “breath” is our spirit, a direct impartation of life from Almighty God that gives us both self-awareness and eternal significand.The Bible frequently breaks human nature down into three parts: body, soul, and spirit (as noted in [1 ThessaloniansThe Body: Your physical presence; it tethers you to the world and operates through your five senseThe Soul: Your inner life of humanity. It comprises your mind (intellect), will (choices), and emoji.. The Spirit: The deepest part of your being that relates directly to God. While the soul makes you aware of yourself, the spirit makes you aware of God.In [Proverbs 20:27], the Bible says, “The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart.” Your spirit is how you understand wisdom, design, and moral truths. It functions as a receiver or a bridge through which God’s Spirit can guide, convict, and comfort youThe Bible teaches that due to human rebellion (sin), an individual’s spirit starts out “dead” toward God, meaning it is disconnected from His life. However, when a person accepts salvation through Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit breathes new life into the human spirit—an experience the Bible refers to as being born again. At this point, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside the believer, and the two become “one spirit”.
