Luke 19:41–44: Jesus weeps over Jerusalem.

Mark 11:12-14 (fig tree), and John 12:1-11 (anointing at Bethany)

Lesson:

Holy Week is the most sacred week in Christianity, spanning the final eight days of Jesus’ life, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. It commemorates his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, crucifixion on Good Friday, and resurrection, marking the foundation of Christian faith.Commemorates Jesus’ humble entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, welcomed by crowds with palm branches.Holy Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday: Days filled with teaching, cleansing the Temple, and, on Wednesday (“Spy Wednesday”), Judas Iscariot’s betrayal, say this Dynamic Catholic article and this.Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday): Commemorates the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist, and the washing of the disciples’ feet.Good Friday: A solemn day marking the passion, crucifixion, and death of Jesus.

Holy Monday, the second day of Holy Week, commemorates Jesus returning to Jerusalem from Bethany, cursing a fruitless fig tree, and cleansing the Temple by overturning tables of money changers. It marks a shift from the triumphal entry to active confrontation with religious authorities, emphasizing themes of divine judgment, spiritual fruitfulness, and cleansing. Jesus entered the Temple and threw out those buying and selling, citing that it should be a “house of prayer” rather than a “den of robb. This act directly challenged the corrupt temple leadership, speeding up their plot to kill him. While traveling from Bethany, Jesus cursed a leafy tree that bore no fruit Matthew 21:18–22, Wikipedia. This act is symbolic of spiritual judgment against hypocrisy and outward righteousness that lacks inward fruit. Following the cleansing, Jesus continued to teach and heal in the Temple. The religious leaders questioned his authority, seeking to discredit him.

In some traditions, Holy Monday also recalls the account of Mary of Bethany anointing Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume, serving as a preparation for his upcoming burial.Jesus acts as the rightful King and High Priest, cleansing his “house” and asserting his authority over the corrupt establishment. The fig tree incident calls for genuine faith that produces action, rather than mere religious display. Holy Monday sets the stage for Maundy Thursday, showing Jesus in control of the events leading to his sacrifice. This day encourages believers to examine their lives for “hidden” areas needing cleansing—areas where hypocrisy may exist. It is a time for reflection on personal spiritual fruitfulness and a call to return to a life of prayer and genuine devotion.

Holy Monday, the second day of Holy Week, marks Jesus’ first full day in Jerusalem following his triumphal entry on Palm Sunday. It is a day characterized by prophetic judgment and the assertion of divine authority, transitioning from the public celebration of Sunday to the rising tension that leads to the crucifixion. Holy Monday serves as a call for believers to examine their own “spiritual temples” for hidden sins, greed, or “leaves” of religiosity that lack the actual fruit of the Spirit. Known as “Great and Holy Monday,” the liturgy often focuses on the figure of Joseph (from the Old Testament) as a “type” or foreshadowing of Christ, as well as the fig tree narrative. Modern observances often encourage introspection and confession, using the temple cleansing as a metaphor for purging idols like pride or greed from one’s heart.

Closing Prayer: Lord Jesus, as I begin this Holy Week, I remember the zeal You had for Your Father’s house when You cleansed the Temple. I invite You into the temple of my own heart today. Clear away the clutter of my distractions, selfishness, and anxieties. Purify my motives, that I may focus entirely on Your sacrifice and love. Give me the strength to walk with You through this week, from the cheers of Palm Sunday to the shadows of the Cross.

Our Lord and savior we pray. Please forgive me of my sin

against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the

Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me.
