Lesson:
Holy Thursday, or Maundy Thursday, marks the start of the Paschal Triduum, commemorating the Last Supper, the institution of the Eucharist and priesthood, and the washing of the disciples’ feet. It highlights Jesus’ command of humility and love, bridging the Jewish Passover with the new covenant of His imminent sacrifice. During the Last Supper, Jesus identified the bread and wine as his Body and Blood, establishing the Eucharist as a sacred, abiding sacrifice.
Holy Thursday celebrates the establishment of the ordained priesthood, tasked with carrying on the Eucharistic sacrifice. The evening concludes with the agony in the garden and Jesus’ arrest, initiating his Passion. Occurs in the evening, characterized by the Gloria (often with ringing bells), followed by the solemn stripping of the altar, signifying the stripping of Christ.
Many churches perform this, where the priest washes the feet of parishioners to re-enact Christ’s act of service.Holy Thursday fulfills the old covenant Passover; Jesus is seen as the true Lamb of God offering his life. The term “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum (command), stemming from John 13:34: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you”.
Holy Thursday is not just a historical commemoration but a present reality in Christian faith, uniting the themes of intimate love, humble service, and the sacrificial gift of the Eucharist, leading worshippers from the Upper Room into the Passion of Good Friday. The original Holy Thursday was a “power-packed” day that included several pivotal moments in Jesus’ ministry:
Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples, transforming the traditional Jewish meal into the New Passover. In a profound act of humility, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, setting an example of servant leadership.
Jesus gave the “mandate” (mandate) to “love one another; as I have loved you,” which is where the name. Following the meal, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray n agony before being betrayed, judged and arrested. By instructing the apostles to “do this in memory of me,” Jesus is believed to have ordained them as the first priests of the New Covenant.
Closing Prayer:”Heavenly Father, Your love is eternal. We offer You a place in our home and in our hearts. Come, help us open our door to You, stay with us. Bring us Your peace and Your joy. As You gave Your life like bread and wine, we thank You for giving us everything. Help us to love one another as You have loved us, in service and humility.”
Our Lord and savior we pray. Please forgive me of my sin
against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the against you, please come into my heart. By the power of the
Holy Spirit. Thank you Lord for saving me.
