1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (NIV).
Proverbs 28:13: “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (NIV).
Psalm 51:1-2: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgression.
Acts 2:38: “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins…'” (NIV).
Our Heavenly Father encourages ongoing repentance, viewing the request for forgiveness as a privilege for believers to maintain communion, not just a duty. Just as Christ taught to forgive “seventy times seven” times, God offers unending forgiveness to those who return and confess.Including “forgive us our debts” ensures believers regularly address sins that disrupt fellowship with Our Heavenly Father.
Forgiveness from Our Heavenly Father is tied to our willingness to forgive others; harboring unforgiveness creates distance in our relationship with Him. 1 John 1:9 ensures that confessing sins leads to cleansing and forgiveness, as God is faithful and just. Regularly asking for forgiveness allows Christians to align their hearts with God’s mercy and find peace.
