While Memorial Day is a secular, patriotic holiday, the concept of a “memorial” is deeply rooted in Scripture. From setting up physical stones of remembrance to the Passover feast, the Bible regularly commands believers to remember God’s deliverance and the sacrifices made on their behalf
In the Bible, memorials were instituted to keep history alive so future generations would understand the cost of their freedom and the providence of God. In Joshua 4, God commanded the Israelites to set up twelve stones after crossing the Jordan River. When children asked what the stones meant, the parents were to recount the story of God’s provision.Instituted in Exodus 12, Passover served as an annual, sacred memorial to remind the Israelites of their dramatic deliverance from slavery in Egypt.
