Pastors often point to wars, moral decay, and disasters as signs described in Matthew 24 and 2 TimothyOur Heavenly Father has not given us a spirit of fear, nor has He left us in the dark. Scripture maps out the prophetic timeline not to scare us, but to prepare us, to sanctify us, and to call us into absolute readiness for the return of His Son/he Bible explicitly warns us that the approach of the last days will be marked by a profound breakdown in human character and relationships. In 2 Timothy 3:1–5, the Apostle Paul warns that “in the last days perilous times shall come”. He describes a society populated by people who are: [1]
- Lovers of their own selves and lovers of money
- Proud, blasphemous, and disobedient to parents
- Unholy, unthankful, and unforgiving
- Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God [1]
Perhaps the most dangerous trait Paul mentions is that people will have “a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” We are warned of a rising number of self-proclaimed believers who ultimately reject the true authority of Christ. There is a strict warning in scripture against changing God’s Word to fit a lawless culture. As the love of many grows cold, we cannot afford to be “at ease in Zion”. When the disciples asked Jesus on the Mount of Olives about the signs of His coming, His very first warning was: “Take heed that no man deceive you.” (Matthew 24:4). [1, 2]
Deception is the hallmark of the end times. The enemy excels at mimicry, often dressing up things that look holy but are completely detached from the simplicity and purity that is in Christ. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 notes that the Day of the Lord will not come until there is a “falling away” first. [1]
To endure to the end, we must actively hear from Our Heavenly Father through His written Word, guarded by a lifestyle of prayer and repentance. Without holiness and adherence to truth, our vision becomes clouded. We cannot judge our standing by the world’s standards, but by the infallible truth of scripture. [] [1]
